36 coney street
36 Coney Street is a Grade II* listed property on Coney Street, York. Parts of the property date back to the 15th Century, and some of the timber framing survives from this period. The project proposes a sensitive renovation and amendments to convert the upper levels into 8 residential apartments.

The restoration of the vacant buildings at ground, first and second floor to create self contained residential apartments accessed from a shared courtyard.

The building has developed over time, the oldest part is found towards the rear and dates from the 15th Century. The main facade on Coney Street dates from the late 18th Century, between these two elements is a 19th Century infill. The remaining 15th Century fabric is surrounded by an 18th Century extension. The evolution of the building has led to the current situation where the property is read as 4 distinct zones at the upper floors; the part facing Coney Street, the self contained 18th Century Cottage to the rear, the 15th -18th Century rear extension and the 19th Century infill. Each of these areas have different floor levels and are accessed from seperate stairs at ground floor.

Design Approach: Our proposal is to work within the existing fabric of the building, utilising existing historic stairs, floors and walls to create 8 self contained residential apartments. Where appropriate we have restored the original plan form, including reinstating the original lightwell to the 18th Century front building.
Modern doors, windows and partitions will be removed and replaced with heritage appropriate alternatives.
